Putting Traditional Astrology to Work in a Modern Context
The explosion of interest in Traditional Astrology has exposed
many techniques to the modern astrologer but often without the context
needed to understand and apply them.
This workshop in two parts will explore and provide context for the meanings
we have come to attribute to two of the houses, the 2nd and the 8th
and it will also explore an obscure technique called ‘The Noddings of the
Moon’.
Casting Down &
Rising Up: the Origins of the 2nd & 8th Houses
The terms 'epicataphora'
and 'anaphora' are not familiar to the modern astrologer. They are names
given to the 2nd and 8th houses and refer to their
role as portals of the underworld. House meanings were
originally defined by the diurnal movement of the Sun. With the 8th
house, the Sun traversing this sector of the sky is seen to start ‘falling’
from a position of supremacy to its eventual decline in the western
horizon. Similarly, the 2nd house by position, lies underneath
the earth and both houses carry with them the epithet, Gates of Hades.
However, the difference is whereas the 8th was seen as the
entrance into the underworld, the 2nd was seen as the exit
from it.
This workshop
looks at the origin of the meanings of both these houses, how they colour
planetary expression and their significance in astrological practice.
The Noddings of
the Moon
In our solar oriented astrology, the
Moon's influence and power has been underrated and often ignored. The
technique of the Moon's Noddings is very old but we have to hand only
fleeting references in material which spans a period of over 1500 years.
This has meant that the Noddings have been relegated to the astrological
archives. However, the Noddings provide an interesting insight into the
influence the Moon can have on planets and their expression in the
individual's life. The Noddings also reflects the Moon's movement in the sky
and here we have astrological technique mirroring actual astronomical
movement. The Noddings can give us an insight into what the Moon gives (or
denies) and not everyone receives this benediction, which can be both a
blessing and a curse.
This workshop will discuss the importance of this lost technique and how, if
present in a horoscope, it can add to the interpretation of natal
configurations.
